Guidelines Webinar: Aortic Disease
The inaugural webinar focuses on all known aspects of the natural history, diagnosis and treatment of both acute and chronic aortic pathologies. Presenting two case studies, this webinar provides practical insight into how the EACTS/STS Guidelines for diagnosing and treating acute and chronic syndromes of the aortic organ can be applied to improve skills, surgery and patient outcomes.

Manuel Santander is a cardiac surgery resident in Göttingen, Germany, with a strong interest in integrating research with clinical practice in the OR and ICU to improve evidence-based care. He is committed to advancing cardiac surgery education, ensuring the seamless transfer of knowledge and experience between generations, and exploring innovative training strategies to improve surgical skills.
Dr. Joseph Kletzer is a second-year resident in cardiac and vascular surgery at the Heart Center Freiburg. His clinical and research interests focus on aortic disease, perioperative outcomes, and the application of machine learning in cardiac surgery. He is actively involved in international collaborations to advance patient-specific risk prediction and surgical techniques.
Martin Czerny is a cardiac and vascular surgeon and associate professor of surgery, eMBA. He undertook his surgical training in Vienna (Professor Wolner) and held the position of Attending Surgeon and Director of Clinical Research at the Inselspital Berne until August 2013. From 2013 to 2015, Martin worked as a consultant at the University Clinic of Cardiovascular Surgery in Zurich. He is currently a consultant cardiovascular surgeon at University Hospital Freiburg.
Martin Grabenwoger attended the University of Vienna Medical School where he also undertook his research fellowship. From 1991-1996 he completed his training in general and cardiac surgery at the University of Vienna (Prof. Dr. E. Wolner) and at the Department of Cardiac Surgery, General Hospital St. Polten (Prim. Dr. H. Kassal). He is board certified by the Austrian Board of Surgery, by the Austrian Board of Cardiac Surgery and by the Austrian Board of Vascular Surgery. Since October 2004 he has held the position of Head of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Hospital Hietzing, Vienna. He is member of several European Associations and was Chairman of the Vascular Domain of the EACTS between 2009 and 2011. In addition he was member of the Techno College Resource Group and the Program Committee of the EACTS. From October 2014 to October 2015, Martin Grabenwoger was President of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery. His areas of interest are complex aortic surgery, minimally invasive mitral valve surgery and reconstructive aortic root surgery. In 2019 his department moved to a newly built hospital in Vienna and is now called Clinic Floridsdorf.
Dr Eduard Quintana trained in cardiovascular surgery at Hospital Clínic Barcelona, followed by a 2 year clinical fellowship at the Mayo Clinic Rochester MN. He is a consultant cardiovascular surgeon and associate professor of surgery at the University of Barcelona Medical School – Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. He is a teacher and coordinator in the Biomedical Engineering Degree at the University of Barcelona. He is currently in charge of the Cardiovascular Surgery and Postoperative Critical Care fellowship program and Coordinator of teaching activities at the Cardiovascular Institute of the Hospital Clínic. He is a Board Member, Secretary and Examiner of the European Board of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Examination. His clinical interests focus on diseases of the aorta, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, infective endocarditis and critical care. Dr. Quintana has been a board member of the EACTS Vascular Domain, chair of the aortic dissection task force and is an active member of the cerebral/visceral protection task force of EACTS. Dr. Quintana is a board member at the EACTS Francis Fontan Fund Fellowship and member of the EACTS Clinical Practice Guidelines.
