Markus K Heinemann went to medical school in Heidelberg, Germany and Oxford, UK. After graduation and starting in general surgery in Frankfurt, Germany, he completed his training and subsequent specialisation in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at Hannover Medical School under HG Borst. A research fellowship brought him to Childrens’ Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. He underwent completion of his training in pediatric cardiac surgery at Tuebingen University, Germany, and became a professor of surgery for congenital heart defects at Mainz University in 2000. In 2010 he was elected as Editor-in-Chief of The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon, the scientific journal of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and has been a member of its Board of Directors ever since.
