Juan Grau
Dr. Grau is the Director of Cardiothoracic Surgical Services for The Valley Health Care System and a Professor of Surgery at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He graduated from residency in the Department of Surgery at New York University (NYU), followed by a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery, with board certifications in general surgery and thoracic surgery. His clinical interests include advanced coronary revascularization using arterial grafting and off-pump approach with a non-touch technique of the aorta, advanced aortic and mitral valve repair techniques, the surgical treatment of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with LVOT obstruction and adult congenital surgery.
Dr Grau has successfully established productive research teams at each of his academic appointments, including establishing and growing institutional biobanks, improving the quality of trainee education in research, and promoting high-impact clinical research as an important component of clinical care. As part of an international translational research consortium, he is a co-investigator on several NIH R01 grants investigating biomarkers of aortic aneurysms, investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms of mitral valve disease and the structural degeneration of bioprosthetic heart valves.
He established a translational research postdoctoral fellowship to provide advanced training in cardiovascular imaging, clinical care, and basic science to help train the next generation of cardiovascular researchers. He serves as the Chairman of the Translational Research and Surgical Sciences Task Force for the European Association for Cardio Thoracic Surgery and Member of the Review Committee the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
