John Aspden

A facilitator, trainer and executive coach with over 25
years’ experience in international healthcare, medical
technology and professional services companies.
Worked in international sales and marketing in 3M
Healthcare & Pfizer Hospital Products. Fluent in English
and French with a working knowledge of German.
My coaching practice is mainly with people working in
professional services. This covers physicians and
surgeons, lawyers, architects, accountants, where the
challenge is to balance technical skills with other
important skills such as people management, business development and leadership.
From my previous experience in clinical practice I understand the challenges facing
clinicians. Recurrent coaching themes include the balancing of technical knowledge with
leadership/management roles and work/life balance and career-development for
consultants in the new NHS structure. Additionally, with medical career development such
as the GMC’s ‘Tomorrow’s Doctors’ for medical students and ‘Modernising Medical Careers’
for post-graduate doctors.
I use evidence-based coaching approaches to create change, such as Transactional-Analysis
which is well established as both a psychological change model, as well as an organisational
change model. Additionally, my training in Cognitive-Behavioural approaches helps clients to
see the value of modifying thinking to create behavioural change.
Engagement and responsibility are two key areas that we always explore in coaching
sessions. Additionally, self-management and self-leadership are woven into the series of
coaching sessions along with elements of critical thinking, reflective practice, emotional
intelligence and resilience.
