Jan Belohlavek

Jan Belohlavek, MD, PhD, Prof. of Medicine, is the Deputy head of the 2nd Department of Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine at the General University Hospital in Prague, Czech Republic, board certified in Cardiology, Angiology, Critical care, and licenced in Invasive cardiology.

He is an author or coauthor of more than 240 peer reviewed articles, his main clinical and research activities focus on refractory cardiac arrest, ECPR (extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation), ECMO reperfusion, cardiogenic shock and the use of mechanical circulatory devices. He was the main investigator of the Prague OHCA study comparing ECPR/invasive based approach  to standard therapy in refractory cardiac arrest published in JAMA 2022, participated also in the ECMO-CS cardiogenic shock study published in Circulation 2023. He is also active in the field of heart failure, served as a senior investigator and coordinator of the Watchful randomized controlled trial (effect of walking intervention in HFrEF) published in Circulation 2023.

Professor Belohlavek is a chair-elect of the Czech Association of Acute Cardiology, from 2019 till 2022 was the Euro-ELSO President, currently is the member of the Scientific Committee of Euro-ELSO and member of the steering committee of the Czech Society of Cardiology, the Czech Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the Association of Heart Failure of the Czech Society of Cardiology. He has been awarded the best research publication of 2022 by the Czech Society of Cardiology, Czech Society of Intensive Care Medicine, the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague and the Czech Society of Physicians.
