Hazem Fallouh
Dr. Hazem Fallouh is a consultant thoracic surgeon in the regional department of Thoracic Surgery at University Hospitals Birmingham, Queen Elizabeth. He completed groundbreaking research in myocardial protection between 2005 and 2008, earning a PhD from Kings’ College London in 2014. Dr. Fallouh has gained experience in cardiac and thoracic surgery at centres of excellence in the Midlands, Toronto, Wales, London, and Edinburgh. His clinical interests include robotic surgery, minimally invasive Pectus Excavatum and Carinatum surgery and bracing, lung volume reduction, laser metastatectomy, and navigation bronchoscopy.
At Birmingham, Dr. Fallouh initiated the Robotic Surgery programme and established the Diaphragm Centre, pioneering the dual cavity minimally invasive double crown repair for diaphragmatic hernia. He has furthered his interest in lung volume reduction treatment, navigation bronchoscopy, and laser metastatectomy. Dr. Fallouh directs the internationally renowned Birmingham Review Course in Cardiothoracic Surgery and is an active member of various national and international professional organisations, including the SCTS and EACTS innovation committee, and chairs the EACTS Digital and AI Task Force.
As an innovator and pioneer in cardiothoracic surgery, Dr. Fallouh has raised funding and commercialised multiple inventions. He was awarded the EACTS Prestigious Technocollege Innovation Award for his PerDeCT device and the SCTS Ronald Edwards Medal for his STHpol Cardioplegia inventions.
