Gianfranco Butera
Dr Gianfranco Butera received his accreditation as physician from the Catholic University in Rome in 1993. Then he obtained the specialty training degree in both Pediatrics and Cardiology. He did his fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Necker Enfants Malades in Paris from 1996 to 1998. From 1998 to 1999 he was consultant in pediatric cardiology as Chef-de-Clinique at Necker Enfants Malades under the direction of Prof Kachaner and Prof Bonhoeffer. In 2000 moved to Milan where he worked as Consultant at Policlinico San Donato until 2018. He has been Lead Consultant of the Department of Congenital Interventional Cardiology at St Thomas/Evelina Hospital in London between 2018 and 2020. He is Senior lecturer at King’s College University London. In 2020 moved to Bambin Gesù Hospital IRCCS, Rome, Italy, as Director of the Department of Interventional Congenital Cardiology
He has served as Chairman of the Interventional Cardiology Working Group of the AEPC and has been Visiting Professor at various universities including Harvard, Bordeaux, Cincinnati and Padova. He is member of many scientific associations including AEPC, Italian Society of Pediatric Cardiology, ESC, AHA, PICS, SCAI. He has been also deeply engaged in international humanitarian work in different countries including Camerun, Peru, Egypt, Albania.
His clinical and research interests are focused on interventional cardiology in children and adults with congenital heart disease. He has authored more than 230 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has edited 5 books on interventional and fetal cardiology (two of these books have been translated in Chinese)
