Gerard Meachery

Dr Gerard Meachery is a Consultant in Respiratory and Transplant Medicine and Joint Director of the Cardiothoracic Transplant programme based at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK, jointly leading a large multidisciplinary team which is recognised as a centre of excellence for specialised Respiratory Medicine as well as an adult and paediatric cardiothoracic transplant service for patients mainly from the North of England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. He is an invited speaker to many UK and international forums for his expertise in advanced lung disease and lung transplantation. He is member of the UK Cardiothoracic Advisory Group (CTAG) and President of the Freeman Heart & Lung Transplant Patient Association (FHLTA). He has also focused on building strong training and educational partnerships at a national and international level, most recently with the Ministry of Health in Malaysia and with University Hospitals Leuven in Belgium. He has extensive experience as the external examiner for undergraduate medical examinations at medical campuses in Ireland, the Middle East and Malaysia and is an Honorary Associate Professor for the RCSI UCD Medical Campus (RUMC) in Penang, Malaysia. His interests focus on service improvements, clinical lung transplant outcomes, supporting clinical trials in CLAD and medical education.
