Eric E.C. de Waal graduated in 1988 as a medical doctor at the University of Antwerp (Belgium). In 1993 he graduated as an anaesthesiologist at the Free Flemish University in Brussels (Belgium). After finishing his residency in anaesthesiology, he started in 1993 as an anaesthesiologist at the University Medical Centre in Utrecht in Holland, focused on cardiac anaesthesiology and obtained his PhD on advanced cardiovascular monitoring in 2009. He worked as a cardiac anaesthesiologist at Harefield Hospital (RBHT London, UK) for three months (2018-2019). Since April 2017, he is the Chair of the EACTAIC subcommittee Transplantation and Ventricular Assist Devices. His areas of interest are heart and lung transplantation, ventricular assist devices and severe early postoperative complications, such as vasoplegia, right ventricular failure and kidney failure, and their relation to inflammatory biomarkers.
