Chris Munsch is Associate Medical Director for Cardiac Services at the University Hospital in Birmingham. Previously he was a consultant cardiac surgeon at the Yorkshire Heart Centre in Leeds, where he had a special interest in reconstructive mitral valve surgery. He has a long-standing interest in surgical training in which he has held many leadership positions at national and international level over the years. He was recently chairman of the Joint Committee for Surgical Training in the UK. In this role he had responsibility for the development, delivery and quality assurance of training for all surgical specialities, including curriculum development, development of training pathways as well as accreditation of trainers and certification of trainees. He is clinical lead for the Health Education England Technology Enhanced Learning Programme, and believes that healthcare education needs to move beyond traditional apprenticeship models.
