Bart Maesen
Bart Maesen studied medicine at Antwerp University and obtained his medical degree in 2004. He then worked at the Department of Experimental Surgery of Antwerp University, studying early detection of ischemia/reperfusion injury in the kidney. By the end of 2006 he moved to Maastricht University Medical Center and joined the electrophysiology research group at the Department of Physiology at Maastricht University under supervision of Professor Ulrich Schotten. During a PhD trajectory of 4 years, he studied different aspects of the substrate of atrial fibrillation in goat and human. By the end of 2011 he started his training in cardio-thoracic surgery. Since 2017, he works as s cardio-thoracic surgeon at Maastricht University Medical Center. He has been trained in minimal invasive AF surgery (hybrid AF procedure) by Professor Mark La Meir. His interests are minimal invasive cardiac surgery, minimal invasive and concomitant rhythm surgery, transcatheter heart valve implantation and aortic surgery. His research interests are pathophysiological mechanisms of atrial fibrillation and transcatheter heart valve techniques.
