Following the European Society of Cardiology’s (ESC) guidelines publication in collaboration with EACTS, Miia L Lehtinen and Can Gollmann-Tepeköylü host the esteemed Atrial Fibrillation experts, Manuel Castella and Niv Ad. In this month’s episode, our guests explore the nuances of how a surgical approach might be used to treat Atrial Fibrillation and why cardiac surgeons are increasingly interested in this complex electrophysiological condition. In light of the developing accepted practices, listeners can expect comparisons between the Maze procedure and non-surgical approaches, as well as an exploration of the endpoints used to determine patient outcomes.

Niv Ad | Cardiac Surgeon and EiC of Journal Innovations. Niv is a cardiac surgeon from Maryland, USA. He is very active in the field especially in surgery for complex valve disease, minimally invasive valve procedure and surgical AF (stand alone and concomitant). Dr. Ad has led multiple guidelines committees and he is the Editor in Chief of the journal Innovations. 

Manuel Castella | is a cardiovascular surgeon, Head of the Cardiac and Vascular Surgery Department at the Hospital Clínic, and Professor of Surgery at the University of Barcelona. Among all types of cardiac surgery, his main interest and fields of research are valvular repair, minimally invasiveness, atrial fibrillation surgery and pulmonary thromboendarterectomy for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.
