Stefan Jockenhövel

Professor Dr. med. Stefan Jockenhövel is an associated member of the DWI scientific board. He holds the distinguished NRW-Schwerpunktprofessor BioTex – Biohybrid & Medical Textiles (BioTex) which builds the bridge between material and engineering sciences and (bio)medicine. Furthermore Professor Jockenhövel is the director of the Aachen-Maastricht-Institute for Biobased Materials AMIBM, a collaboration between the RWTH Aachen University, Maastricht University and Fraunhofer IME. The AMIBM institute is located at the Brigthland Chemelot Campus in Geleen/Sittard, NL and develops novel biomaterials from biomass towards application.

Prof. Jockenhövel has studied medicine at the RWTH Aachen University and earned his doctor degree in the field of artificial lung support. From 1995 to 2005 he has clinically worked in the field of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the University hospitals in Aachen and Zurich and the heart centres in Luxembourg and Lahr/Baden. Since the end of 2005 he is focusing on the research and development of viable biohybrid implants.

Prof. Dr. med. Jockenhövel’s main research focus is the development of cardiovascular implants (heart valves, vascular prostheses, biological pacemakers) and respiratory implants (endobronchial stents, trachea substitutes, lung parenchyma repair) based on biomimetic, textile-reinforced hydrogel scaffolding systems. BioTex is positioned along the value creation chain from material sciences to textile technology as well as implant development and production and carries out research from the idea to the (pre-)clinical study.
