- (00:53 – 11:29) Paul Rulkens, a renowned expert in high performance, discusses how to courageously innovate and think beyond the limitations of preconceived notions. Rulkens also creatively advises how to approach failure and think differently when developing novel ideas.
- (11:30 – 25:17) Our hosts meet with Shaf Keshavjee, the highly influential thoracic surgeon, director and chief of innovation. Keshavjee talks of their innovation in the field of transplantation, strategically transforming the capabilities of ex-vivo lung perfusion.
- (25:28 – 38:38) The paediatric cardiac surgeon, Pedro del Nido, expresses the value of focussed collaborative innovation in medical device development. Del Nido also discusses how unique approaches are used to address unmet need, for example in paediatric valvular disease.

Dr. Pedro J. del Nido | Chief of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital, the largest congenital cardiac program in North America. He is the William E. Ladd Professor of Child Surgery at Harvard Medical School.
Pedro is a former President of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, a leading international organization of academic Cardiothoracic Surgeons. He has received continuous NIH funding for his laboratory research work for over 20 years. His current research work aims to design and develop novel medical devices and procedures that address the specific needs of pediatric patients. He has over 550 peer reviewed publications, and 25 issued and pending patents, including for “del Nido Cardioplegia” one of the most widely used cardioplegia formulations for heart preservation in adults and children in the world. He has supervised over 30 pre- and post-doctoral research fellows, many of whom have gone on to lead their own programs.
Dr Shaf Keshavjee | Director of the Toronto Lung Transplant Program and Chief of Innovation at University Health Network (UHN). Director of the Latner Thoracic Research Laboratories and Professor of Thoracic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering, and Vice Chair for Innovation in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto.
Shaf received his MD degree from the University of Toronto medical school followed by training in general surgery, cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery at the University of Toronto in Canada.
