Martin Grabenwoger attended the University of Vienna Medical School where he also undertook his research fellowship. From 1991-1996 he completed his training in general and cardiac surgery at the University of Vienna (Prof. Dr. E. Wolner) and at the Department of Cardiac Surgery, General Hospital St. Polten (Prim. Dr. H. Kassal). He is board certified by the Austrian Board of Surgery, by the Austrian Board of Cardiac Surgery and by the Austrian Board of Vascular Surgery. Since October 2004 he has held the position of Head of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Hospital Hietzing, Vienna. He is member of several European Associations and was Chairman of the Vascular Domain of the EACTS between 2009 and 2011. In addition he was member of the Techno College Resource Group and the Program Committee of the EACTS. From October 2014 to October 2015, Martin Grabenwoger was President of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery. His areas of interest are complex aortic surgery, minimally invasive mitral valve surgery and reconstructive aortic root surgery. In 2019 his department moved to a newly built hospital in Vienna and is now called Clinic Floridsdorf.
