Morten Smerup

Morten Smerup graduated in 2000 as a MD from Aarhus University. In 2005 he obtained his PhD from the same institution, and in 2011 he graduated as specialist cardiothoracic surgeon. He has worked as a consultant cardiac surgeon at Aarhus University Hospital in 2013-2014, and at Rigshospitalet since 2015. Morten manages the entire spectrum of adult and paediatric surgery with more than 2800 open hearts in total, and more than 1000 paediatric cases as primary surgeon. He has large experience in aortic surgery (reconstructive root- and arch-procedures), endocarditis- and redo surgery, and in paediatric and adult heart transplantation. Currently, he is head of paediatric cardiac surgery at Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet and associate professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences at Copenhagen University. His areas of interest are reconstructive paediatric and adult cardiac surgery, including valve repair, endocarditis- and redo surgery. He has published 87 peer reviewed papers in scientific journals.
